parenting
The most awesome and exhilarating role—parenting. Being a son or a daughter doesn’t prepare us for all of parenting—the same way being a student wouldn’t prepare you to be a teacher.
Children are independent beings who need to be nurtured so they feel secure enough to explore and grow. If we want them to be independent thinkers we need to give them chances to be independent. While some people think kids are small beings who need to be trained and intimidated into correct behavior, I do not.
We all know parents who play a power game with their children—one of their parenting goals is to have and exert power over their children. While there are times, of course, that we need to have power, that isn’t the ultimate goal. Creating a successful relationship takes time—you and your children are learning together.
Power over our children isn’t the goal—we want to empower them. I recently heard Alfie Kohn tell a story about his wife wanting to change the expression, “It’s not rocket science” to “It’s not parenting” and I totally agree.
Our goal is to always stay connected and attached to your child, to hear and see what your child says and does, and to work with him to model the behaviors that help us thrive.
