FAQs About YOUR FAMILY MAP

Why are you teaching YOUR FAMILY MAP as your first teleclass?

I think most of us have so much going on that we don’t always have much time to stop and think.  For the past two years, my husband and I have been taking a long term look at our lives and hopes, and worked to make our daily life fit into that big picture.  I developed YOUR FAMILY MAP from our work and my experience with other parents.

What is your parenting philosophy?

My parenting philosophy can almost be summed up in the word connection.  First, connection to yourself—honest and aware.  Then, connection with your children—remembering all the time that you are their link, their introduction to the world.  If you have a partner, your connection with that person is another building block of your sense of self, and it’s one to be nourished.  Connection, followed by trust.  Trust in the process, trust that if you are parenting from connection, and mindful in your living, modeling, and choices, that you and your kids will grow and mature into adults who are an asset to themselves and the world.

Will this class make me feel guilty if I think about all the things I haven’t done?

I promise this class will help you be open to the world of possibilities and give you the strength to streamline your choices.  When you think about a particular topic, you’ll be able to check in with yourself, see what’s working, what’s not, look at what other people do, get in touch with your true connection to that topic, and sketch out some long term goals and short term plans.

Why should I take a class about arts and nature and food and screen time?

These are daily aspects of our lives.  We will always have a lot going on—that’s the nature of life and especially life with kids.  This class will give you a chance to see where you are living the philosophy you believe in, where you are doing things without clear purpose, and the time to sort through many details that often slip by while we’re making dinner, doing homework, going to the pediatrician, visiting friends, and everything else.

Can you give me an example?

Yes! In our family, music is really important.  Both my husband and I play instruments, we love to listen to music, to sing, and write songs.  We realized we were paying great attention to music in short bursts-- music lessons for a few months that didn’t go well, playing more guitar for a few days or weeks and then stopping.  We weren’t being consistent: no one had written any songs since I was pregnant, our first child didn’t want to practice when she was taking piano lessons and we disagreed about how we felt about this and how we responded.  We went to some concerts, but not enough.  Basically, one of the most important things for us, music, was getting a haphazard introduction to our family.  When we made our map, we were able to look at our long term vision and make a plan that met our needs, the needs of our different aged children, our budget, our schedule, and more.

What does the map look like?

Ever evolving, the map now is placed on a big spreadsheet.  You can download and print it, or use it on the screen.  There will definitely be times I’ll suggest you use a pen or pencil and think without the keyboard, and other times when typing will be the best idea.

Please join me for the complimentary tele-call  I’ll be giving on Wednesday, February 15th at noon.    In this interactive call, you’ll get a taste of  the family map class and all it can offer.  I will take you through some short journaling exercises and  do some mapping with you and we'll have time for Q&A at the end!
